History

1978
The International Center of Cooperative Research and Development in Microbial Engineering (ICME) is established.
1985
ICME is restarted in recognition of its previous achievements. The center is renamed as the International Center of Cooperative Research in Biotechnology (ICBiotech).
1995
ICBiotech is established as an independent institute for the academic advancement and collaborative research in biotechnology.
December, 2002
The Cooperative Research Station (CRS) in Southeast Asia, International Center for Biotechnology, Osaka University, and Mahidol University – Osaka University Collaborative Research Center (MU-OU CRC) in Mahidol is established.
May, 2013
Building of the International Research Complex for Biotechnology (α + β complex, 4,100 m2) is completed. The department moves-in from the original 1987-established building (1,000 m2).

The International Post-Graduate University Course in Microbiology was initiated in 1973 by the Department of Biotechnology (formerly Department of Fermentation Technology). The course is comanaged by the Department of Biotechnology and ICBiotech (1995-present)/ICME (1978-1995). Postgraduate Inter-University Course in Biotechnology (2004-2007) and Biotechnology School in Asia(JFIT project) (2012-2016) were under the management of both the Department of Biotechnology and ICBiotech.
