UNESCO International Post-graduate University Course in Microbiology (1973-2003)

Outline

The International Post-graduate University Course in Microbiology was founded by in 1973. The course involves scientists from the Asian members of UNESCO, especially young instructors specializing in microbial engineering to blush up their knowledge and elevate their research activity. This course is funded by the Japanese Government, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the International Cell Research Organization (ICRO), and is jointly operated by the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO, Osaka University, Tohoku University, University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Kyushu University. The course aims at the improvement of technical skills of the trainees gearing towards technological innovations in order to foster new frontier in the field of fundamental and industrial microbiology.

The one year training course includes attending lectures on Fundamental and Industrial General Microbiology (37 topics), hands-on experiments (5 topics) and Japanese conversation class (27 h) at Osaka University for the first 2 months and conducting research in any of the above mentioned cooperating universities for the next 10 months. In addition, an educational tour is included to provide valuable information on the Japanese fermentation industry.

Figure shows the distribution of the 397 graduates of the course until 2002, who have become leaders of the universities and government agencies in their home countries.
