UNESCO Postgraduate Inter-University Course in Biotechnology (2004-2007)

Introduction and Background

  • The Historical Review of International Post-Graduate University Course in Microbiology
The 13th UNESCO General Conference Meeting in 1963 proposed the governments including Japan to organize training courses to provide scientific education and research in the newly developing countries. In Japan, the training course in Microbiology, "International Post-Graduate University Course in Microbiology" was launched in 1973 by Osaka University as the main managing university. with Cooperating 4 other Japanese universities, Tohoku University, The University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Kyushu University. The program had been carried on for 30 years, inviting 411 trainees from 19 Asian countries. Thailand was the second major country, following to China. The course was, however, terminated in 2003, due to the financial review.

The achievement of the course was reviewed in 2004 by the evaluation committees. Conclusively, the committee appreciated the program as an excellent training course and satisfied the results. The committee also recommended the continuation of the program or a startup of a new program, renovating contents of training course.
  • Approach to a New Program
According to the termination of the International Post-Graduate University Course in Microbiology, Osaka University proposed a new program based on the suggestion by the above evaluation committee and on the discussion by the professors from five Japanese universities, which had participated in the former Course.

We here emphasized three points in the proposal. The first point is to ask the contribution in a new training program to the alumni having high activities in education and research. Secondly the topic is focused on Biotechnology particularly related to 'Sustainable utilization of Bioresources in Southeast Asia'. It is also emphasized as the third point to strengthen the researcher's network in the region through the collaboration among Asian countries in the course implementation, since Thai government have, recently, committed a strategic policy to support the developing neighboring country as well as collaboration through equal partnership with Japan.
  • Purpose of the Program
The purpose of this program is to conduct a special training in the filed of Biotechnology to the university researchers and lecturers of the UNESCO member countries, and to form the network among those countries to promote the international collaboration and to contribute the socioeconomic development.

The training consists of Advanced and Fundamental Training Course. The aim of the advanced course is to foster future research leaders. The aim of the fundamental course is to bring up the researcher in the developing countries, training fundamental knowledge and technology. By getting the contribution of the leading researchers in Asian countries as lecturers and implementing a part of the course in Kingdom of Thailand, we try to encourage the closer and stronger network in the region.
